On page 5 of your book, Multicultural Education, Transformative Knowledge,and Action (Banks,1996c),you write,"Multicultural education is an education for functioning effectively in a pluralistic,democratic society." There are two aspects of this definition I'd like to ask you about. In some of the writing on multicultural education,the stress is the compensatory role for students of color in terms of self-esteem.That's not something I see emphasized in your definition. Is it implicit in your definition, or is it really less important to you that the conceptualization you give here?
