The longest-distance exchange of earthenware pottery detected in the
region was from the Banda group to Seram, Gorom and .also to the aru
Islands. Banda, before the destruction, expulsion or enslavemet of its
population by the Dutch at the beginning of the seventeenth century was a
major exchange centre as well as the producer of nutmeg, having relations
with Aru, from where sago was obtained, Gorom as part of connections
through to New Guinea, and with western eram, a major source of cloves
in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
