To reduce the generation of free radicals and the potential risk of any subsequent deleterious toxicity effects, the photoactivity of ZnO NPs needs to be quenched prior to this reaction cascade. Tsuzuki et al. studied the possibility of reducing photoactivity of ZnO NPs via surface modification and impurity doping [8]. In this paper we synthesized a nanocomposite containing ZnO nanorods and layered basic zinc acetate (LBZA) with significantly reduced photoactivity, which may provide an alternative way to achieve low photo-induced toxicity.
