This collection of papers starts from an interesting
premise. That is, public histories in Europe have been
shaped to create and support national politics, to give
them temporal depth and promote national belonging. If
there is to be a future for 'Europe' as a political union,
these pasts need renegotiating to form European pasts that
will provide a sense of belonging at the continental level
and will give more substance to European Union than
bureaucratic processes of 'harmonisation'. As a subsidiary
idea, to make the topic approachable, the idea is to look at
the conjuncture of tourism practices with those of identity.
Such is a fascinating conjecture, and a deeply interesting
project, full of contestations and some of the crucial issues
geographers currently address. Unfortunately very few of
the papers assembled here actually address the conjuncture
in the title. This is a missed opportunity, since the
increasingly subtle theorizations of culture and identity
almost always end with a mantra that what is needed is
some really good case study work to amplify these ideas. It
is unfortunate so few of the papers then engage with these
theorizations.
