Early Detection
Spina bifida and other neural tube defects can be detected before birth. The primary prenatal test for birth defects is a blood analysis to check for certain high levels of a protein, called alpha- fetoprotein (AFP screening test), which is elevated for women having fetuses with spina bifida (Mayo Clinic, 2011f). After an ultrasound to check for gaps in the fetus’ spine and to assess severity, the mother might be advised to have a maternal amniocentesis in order to learn more about the possible birth defect. Even though these tests are not always definitive, women should still have these prenatal tests because the results can provide reassurance or allow parents to make special preparations, such as planning to deliver in a specially equipped medical center (March of Dimes, 2009).
