The spatial resolution of Landsat TM (30 30 m)
enabled habitat heterogeneity to be measured at a scale of
90 90 m but the addition of such information failed to
improve habitat discrimination. This failure probably
occurred because habitat patches were considerably smaller
(mean 20 m diameter) than the scale used to derive texture
and therefore texture represented interhabitat heterogeneity
rather than intrahabitat heterogeneity. The latter scale would
be needed to characterise and discriminate habitats effectively.
