Rosa McCauley was born on February 4,1913 in Tuskegee,Alabama,in the southern United States. Her father was a carpenter and her mother was a teacher. They were African American. Her parents separated when she was two years old,and she moved with her mother and brother to her grandparents' farm.
Rosa was homeschooled by her mother until she was eleven.then she attended a private school in Montgomery,ALabama called the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls. During that time in America,black people were not given the same rights as white people. Rosa remembered living in feat as child because of the prejudices,insults,and violence towards blacks.
