Soo Yon rested her head on the desk while the rest of the nurses and doctors hustled in the emergency room. A multiple accident routed fifteen patients to their hospital at the exact moment her shift was supposed to end.She hated times like this.Gathering her strength, Soo Yon stood up and decided to hell with the rest of the weekend. This was more important.“HAN SOO YON!” She heard her mother scream behind her back.Harvard has already accepted. She was going to a place where she can be herself. She was not looking back.“HAN SOO YON!” She could the desperation from her mother’s pleas.Soo Yon didn’t look back. This was her change to do something for herself, to be something for herself. There were no expectations to live up to. She only had to do one thing.Live.She got used to working part time that it came handy in college. She even tutored Americans who wanted to learn Korean on her free time. It was hard at first, but at least Soo Yon didn’t have to hide. She has been accepted as an openly gay student. Her roommate, Clarisse, was a straight German girl who wasn’t even afraid to be in the same room as her. It was a refreshing start for Soo Yon who endured so much torment till graduation. Those books she read, those long hours in the library paid off for her. Now she was where she can be herself for the first time.Support groups were available in school. She didn’t have problems with bullies. She wondered why she wasn’t born in this part of the world. But then she gave thanks to her homeland. Her resolve, determination and perseverance would be lacking if not for the things she had gone through.Everything happens for a reason. Soo Yon would remind herself. Some day she would make Korea proud. She would make them proud in a way they would accept.Acceptance wasn’t a problem in the US. Soo Yon found herself being swooned over for her wit. People would say there was something with her eyes and her lips. Soo Yon would just smile. She only wanted to know if someone still wanted her. That someone happened to be a million miles away probably not even thinking about her.She found herself weaving to patients four and five but when she got to number seven, her eyes widened.“Do I know you?” She asked not entirely sure if she was dreaming about being back in Korea.“Soo Yon sumbae! It’s me, An Chae-Yool!” The girl greeted her arms embracing Soo Yon.“I…”“I’m glad it’s you. We’ve been looking for you… God we’ve been looking everywhere for you….”Soo Yon could see the tears in the girl’s eyes. As it happened a boy appeared with a sad smile on his face to soothe the girl’s sobs.“Ah… Doctor Han, good thing you’re here. I need a ortho-consult. She sustained injuries after the crash. I see bruising, but I want to know if it’s safe to operate. She has a splinter lodged on her left leg.”Soo Yon decides to ask questions later and faces her colleague to get the chart. She starts reading the other pages except for the information page.“Eun Bin Park…” She heard her colleague say.“Her name is Eun Bin Park…”
