we consider show me as a performance-based response to what a teacher observes, one that to an extent combines elements of the observation and the interview. Year ago, Sueltz, Boynton, and Sauble (1946) recognized that "observation, discussion, and interview serve better than paper-pencil tests in evaluation a pupil's ability to understand the principles used" (p. 145). this is a "stop and drop" activity where a student, pair of student, small group, or perhaps the entire class might be asked to show how something works, how a problem was solved, how a particular manipulative material or related representation was used, etc. Teachers and mathematics leaders using the show me CBFA technique indicated that it validated information gathered from the observation and/or interview and that it provided a heads-up for redirecting student responses.
