In this study, the scope extension of the LC-MS method for the
analysis of preservatives in dairy products was successfully achieved,
allowing the insertion of a new analyte (benzoic acid) and
new matrices (butter and margarine). The method fits for purpose,
revealing a high non-compliance rate (30%) in the assessed samples
of Brazilian butters. On the other hand, the samples of imported
butters and samples of Brazilian margarines analyzed were all
compliant to current regulation. Our results demonstrate that
consumption of butters adulterated with preservatives can pose a
health risk, especially for sensitive Brazilian consumers, and that
