High
precipitation and freshwater runoff are the major non-point
sources that affect water quality and probably accounts, with
ocean currents, for higher dispersal of pollutants through coastal
marine waters to affect all areas. Strong wave and current action
during the monsoon season results in high re-suspension of sediment.
Sewage discharge and monsoonal effects may be synergistic
as sediment levels (and hence shading) and nutrients combine to
possibly exceed the natural level of resistance and resilience of coral
reef biota.
