Surface modification of cellulose nanofibrils using styreneacrylic
monomers was successfully obtained in aqueous
medium with a monomer dropwise polymerization method.
No fluorine chemical is used in the aerogel, and the
hydrophobic modification of CNF was done in water directly
rather than in organic solvent. Hydrophobic aerogels were
presented using the modified CNF. The hydrophobic aerogels
displayed similar characteristics as those of previously reported
CNF aerogels with fluorine chemical modification, including
low density, highly porous structure, and excellent elasticity.
