ambulance car staff, although reports primarily from the USA suggest that MRSA contamination of ambulance cars is putting staff and patients at risk.4e6 National and local infection control recommendations may vary largely. While some organisations recommend disinfection of all internal surfaces of the ambulance car after a patient with MRSA has been transported, others perform disinfection of contact surfaces only. This study was therefore initiated to determine the frequency of MRSA contamination of ambulance cars and whether contamination is confined to surfaces in the patient’s vicinity. The study focused on transport times of up to 20 min, which in the local setting at the University Hospital of Würzburg, Germany, account for the majority of transport events.
