We have presented a holistic indicator (AESPI) to evaluate Thailand’s energy security status for the period 1986–2030 that considers the three dimensions of sustainable development (social, economic and environment). AESPI and GIs can be used to measure the energy security status and illustrate the past and future energy performance of a country. They can also be used to study how quickly policies could improve its overall energy security performance, and as a benchmark for further improvement. AESPI and GIs present the annual trends which can be directly used to evaluate energy efficiency and renewable energy policies, and could be used for indirect impact evaluation of energy laws, energy standards,
raising energy awareness, promotion measures including petroleum price subsidies, etc. Therefore, they can guide policy
makers to focus on the areas and improvement options, as well as to track, monitor and evaluate the energy policies/measures. The results for Thailand indicate that low carbon society will provide an improvement in the performance of energy security. Besides, AESPI and GIs can be further used at provincial level (as shown in the case of Phuket) to observe the performance at subnational level for comparison with national level to guide which provinces need more support of additional policies and measures.
