Internet and government publications were searched from
January 2006 to January 2007 to identify relevant policies.
Key words for this search were “seniors,” “community nutrition,”
“food,” “policy,” and “legislation.” E-mail and/or
phone contact was made with knowledgeable individuals,
including members of the Federal/Provincial/Territorial
Group on Nutrition and Dietitians of Canada, to identify

policies not found in the search. Policy was defined as “a
plan or course of action, as of a government or political
party or business, intended to influence and determine” (8);
“plan” may involve health promotion and healthy eating,
community nutrition programs, guidelines, or public health
activities. The focus was general nutrition policy and not
disease-specific.
