1.2. Limit of detection
From the previous section, it is clear that despite the efforts to standardize concepts, there is still confusion about some terms in method validation, like selectivity and specificity, rug‐ gedness and reproducibility, accuracy and trueness. Nevertheless, the most troublesome concept of all, in method validation is the limit of detection (LOD). LOD remains an ambiguous quantity on analytic chemistry in general and gas chromatography in particular; LOD’s differing by orders of magnitude are frequently found for very similar chemical measurement process (CMP). Such discrepancies raise questions about the validity of the concept of the LOD.
The limit of detection is the smallest amount or concentration of analyte in the test sample that can be reliably distinguished from zero [20].
