This method of training is effective because it gives workers
the ability to perform a variety of jobs at the workplace and sometimes helps
to eliminate the potential for boredom. Housekeeping employees can be crosstrained
in laundry, hotel bell-staff may be cross-trained as lifeguards or as frontdesk
agents, restaurant food servers can be cross-trained to work the
cashier/greeter station, and kitchen grill workers can be cross-trained to work
in the pantry. Each of these examples helps to provide employees with exposure
to a variety of jobs and provides management with greater flexibility when assigning
tasks. Cross-training also enables management to run a smooth operation
when employees are on vacation or absent, because cross-trained employees
can step in and perform the tasks of the absent employee. Cross-training employees
also helps employees to develop skills and acquire knowledge that may lend
themselves well to potential career advancements.
