Discussion
Several key finding were noted in this study. First,
monkey bars were the most common cause of fracture;
compared with slides, injuries owing to monkey bars were
1.9 times more likely, and swings, 0.9 times more likely to
result in a fracture. This was noted byWaltzman et al [5] who
noted that 61% of the injurers owing to monkey bars were
fractures, relatively similar to the 52% in this study. The
percentage in this study is likely lower since theWaltzman et
al study involved a major tertiary referral children's hospital,
whereas the NEISS data represents a sample of all EDs
around the country. The 52% in this study is a likely a better
representation of the true number of fractures owing to
monkey bars.
