Figure 2. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the spherules collected from the Anjar intertrappean Iridium-rich layers. The spherules provide additional evidence for the shock metamorphism at the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. The clay mineral in which the sphrules are embedded is identified as sepiolite-palygorskite group smectite. We also observed that smectites are least in the iridium poor section.
