Once the papillae were erect, suture was tied around the circumference of the tongue. Photographs were taken before, during, and after saline injection with a digital camera mounted on a dissecting scope (Nikon Eclipse e600 with Nikon DXM 12000C digital camera). Adobe Photoshop was used to adjust the brightness and color balance of each photograph. Using ImageJ software, length and width of the artificially inflated tongues were measured using the same anatomical landmarks described in High-Speed Movies of Nectar-Feeding Bats.
