The state may elect to produce directly some goods services itself in tandem with or instead of production by private firms. Our earlier case of social housing provision in the Netherlands would be one example of mixed public and private provision: the Dutch government and private firms build houses in the Netherlands. An in stance of wholly public provision arose in Britain after the Second World War, when coal and steel production were taken from the private sector and run exclusively for many years by state-owned firms.
