Through a Teaching Development Grant funded by the Faculty
Education at The University of Hong Kong, we have developed a
prototype of social bookmarking and a repository system based on
Web 2.0 ideas. The system is called RISAL—Repository of
Interactive Social Assets for Learning. The authors believe that
this system has an as yet unrealized potential to support teaching
and learning at the University. In particular, the system should
support utilization of existing resources and provision of new
resources, as well as suitable pedagogical approaches supporting
achievement of learning outcomes and overall educational aims of
the University. The authors introduced RISAL in a seminar
presented at the University in December 2008. Since then, they
have received numerous expressions of interest and formed
strategic partnerships across faculties to explore venues for further
development of RISAL into a larger set of tools for support of
teaching and learning the University level. In this paper, the
authors describe the RISAL system, argue for its effectiveness to
support teaching and learning in higher education and present
ideas for further development of the existing system into a more
powerful environment.
