Don’t mistake thirst for hunger
Before you start snacking or go back for seconds, have a glass of water and wait 10 minutes. If you’re still hungry after that, munch away.
Don’t avoid sugar altogether
It’s a myth that, once diagnosed with diabetes, people have to avoid sugar in all its forms – the occasional indulgence is fine.
Don’t drink your calories
Fizzy drinks, squashes, smoothies, fruit juices and alcohol are all packed with calories. While fruit juices and smoothies can give you a nutrient boost, they can be high in sugar and don’t contain the filling fibre of the whole fruits. Instead, choose water (add some cucumber or lemon slices for flavour), sugar-free cordials, tea (including herbal varieties) and coffee with reduced-fat milk. Enjoy alcohol in healthy moderation – stick to the recommended guidelines of 2–3 units for women, 3–4 units for men. A small (125ml) glass of 12% ABV wine is 1.5 units.
Don’t eat ‘diabetic’ foods
They’re expensive, contain the same amount of fat and calories as standard products – if not more – and excessive consumption can have laxative effects. You’re better off saving your money and having a small amount of the real deal instead.
Do plan ahead
Plan meals for the week, be prepared for the challenging times of the day, and look at restaurant menus online. This will give you more control over what you eat and the amount of calories you consume.
Do practise mindful eating
Chew your food, taste the flavours and give your body time to register it’s full – you may be surprised that you actually eat less and enjoy it more.
Do keep moving
Being active has many health benefits. It stimulates feel-good endorphins, keeps your heart healthy and can help your body to control glucose levels better. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. If you need to lose weight, increase this to 45–60 minutes each day. Find easy ways to fit more activity into your day here.
*Weight-loss results will vary and are down to your individual circumstances and the amount of weight you have to lose.
