Assertions of belief, then, are different from assertions of truth. If White says "p is true" and Black says "p is no true," they are contradicting one another, and one of them must be mistaken (p cannot be "true for you and not true for me"). But if White says, "I believe p is true" and Black says "I believe p is not true" their statements do not contradict one another, and both of them may well be true. It may be true that White believes p and also true that Black does not. Whether or not p is true, then, is an entirely different question from whether or not one believes p to be true.
