Figure 4.1The various measures in a quadrat give very different information about the relative abundances of two species; a large, pale species and a small, dark species. Density counts suggest relative abundances of the large and small species of 1 : 1.25; frequency among the 15 subdivisions (rooted frequency, where the small inner circle represents the stem – note that this sometimes spans two subdivisions) 1 : 1.17; cover 1 : 0.31; and biomass (assuming that plants are hemispheres and have the same tissue density) 1 : 0.16.
