Ammonia is one of the microbial products that is known to have negative health effects
in both humans and animals (COLINA et al., 2001). Under intensive production, rabbits
produce the greater amount of wastes. In addition any excess of dietary protein will
contribute to urea formation, which may be hydrolyzed to ammonia by urease present in
manure (AARNINK et al., 1998). Also, ammonia concentration in the rabbitry may be high
because of reduced ventilation rates in an attempt to conserve the heat in the winter.
