The affective variable that relates to second language learning is culture shock.
Culture shock is a term used to describe the anxiety and feelings (of surprise,
disorientation, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within an entirely
different cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country. It can also describe
culture shock as the physical discomfort when one moves a residence to a different
place. Culture shock results from the anxiety and disorientation a learner experiences
upon entering the culture of the target language (Schumann, 1978).
