The use of US to inactivate microorganisms was reported in the late
1920s (Harvey & Loomis, 1929), but the limited lethal effect on microbial
cells hampered its use as a sterilization method. However, improvements
in ultrasound generation technology over the last two decades have stimulated
interest in microbial inactivation using this technology (Pagan,
Manas, Raso, & Condon, 1999).
