In addition to analysing the increasing amount of data we have on physical activity in our society, it is informative and certainly interesting to note a few observations of everyday life that relate to physical activity. To support the claims made in this opening chapter that some forms of physical activity have increased over the past decade or so, it is quite obvious that there are more exercise classes available in the community and more joggers on the street in comparison with, say, fif-teen years ago. Even the social climate seems to have changed. Joggers on the street are no longer a strange sight and are accepted by passersby. Cycling has become a fashionable pursuit in respect of clothes, styles of bikes, etc. Sports shops are numerous and sports/leisure wear is fashionable, although whether this reflects increased participation, of course, is another matter.
