Most major airports have several runways, but small airports might have only single runway or one runway. The airport that has more than one runway and used in preference to others whenever the weather conditions permit called primary runway or main runway. That is mean primary runway is oriented into the prevailing winds. It is most appropriate for aircraft takeoff and landing is headwind whereas the least and highly unsafe is crosswind. The runway located where the winds blow from various directions, and towards the most common crosswind directions called crosswind runways' (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, 2011; Young & Wells, 2011) When a new airport was built or expanded existing airport, the runway layout is of major concern. This is for the reason of optimum use of the prevailing winds due to aircraft needs to take off and land directly into the wind. It is recommended to avoid crosswind, since it can be hazardous.
