The City

Newcastle is regarded as the capital of the North East of England. It is a lively, compact, cosmopolitan and
student friendly city which is located on the banks of the River Tyne. It is famous for its world-class culture, vibrant nightlife, fascinating history, great shopping and beautiful architecture. Whatever your interests, the city has something to offer you.

The University is situated in the city centre and easy to get around so transport costs are low. The city has a bus and underground Metro system, linking the city centre to the suburbs and the coast.

Newcastle United is one of the most famous football clubs in the country, playing in the Premier League and the city is also home to English Premiership rugby union team the Newcastle Falcons, basket ball team the Newcastle Eagles and ice hockey team the Newcastle Vipers.

There is also an international athletics stadium in Gateshead and Durham County Cricket Club play their home games in nearby Chester-le-Street. In 2013, the ground will host an ‘Ashes’ test match between England and Australia.

Stunning countryside and coastal scenery is within easy travelling distance of the city, including hills, lakes, castles and beautiful coastlines.

The historic city of Durham is just a fifteen-minute train journey away. The cities of York and Edinburgh – the capital of Scotland – are easy to reach by train or bus, while London is only a three-hour train journey away.
