Lesson COG 46
Task: Print letters.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, COG 6, COG 43, COG 45, SEN 13
Concept: This activity is an extension of the already obtained skill of "copy letters" (COG 43) and the ability to "name letters" (COG 45). The objective is to reduce dependence on copying and have the student retain the concept of each letter in his or her memory. This ability can later lead to independent writing skills. Capital letters in a block style arc chosen for this exercise, but modifications can be made to suit the student's environment or realities.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to "please write the letters of the alphabet," the student will print each letter to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Flash cards containing the letters of the alphabet, various-size markers, and paper.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student the concept of "copy letters" (COG 43) and the ability to "name letters" (COG 45).
2. Using a "connect-the-dots" concept, provide the student with the outline of letters to draw and provide physical guidance as needed. Have the student state the name of the letters that have been drawn. Reduce guidance until only verbal prompting is needed.
3. Continue Step 2, using fewer connecting dots so that the dots no longer outline the letter but are placed at the key points needed for drawing to change direction.
4. Using the prompt of "please write the letters of the alphabet," physically guide the student through the process of writing each letter and prompt the student to say the name of each letter as it is printed.
5. Continue Step 4, reducing physical guidance until only verbal step-by-step prompts are needed.
6. Reduce all prompting until only the total-task request is needed.
