ratio was similar to that containing natural aggregates [8]. Similar results have been reported by other researchers [9, 10]. Whilst these studies suggest potential for RCA use in high-strength concrete, issues relating to durability or long-term performance, relevant to practice, have never been considered. This paper examines the influences of coarse RCA on high-strength, C50 or greater, concrete performance and addresses practical issues relating to its use. The work described is part of a comprehensive research and development programme undertaken at the Concrete Technology Unit of the University of Dundee, aimed at addressing the technical and practical aspects of the use of RCA in concrete construction.
