Plant growth is affected by numerous factors, including
climate, pest pressure, and nutrient availability. As plants
grow, they rely on their roots to provide structural support,
water, and nutrients. The right nutrients are essential
for growing healthy, productive plants. Well–managed,
fertile soils can supply plants with all the nutrients
they need. Managing soil fertility requires attention to
the source, timing, rate, and placement of nutrient applications.
Certified organic growers use only nutrients
that are derived naturally because the use of most synthetic
fertilizers is not allowed. For more information on
certified organic production, contact your local organic
certifier (see Further Reading).
Many types of fertilizers and soil amendments are
available for organic plant production. This publication
discusses fertilizer formulations, nutrients and nutrient
availability, and application practices for common
organic products. While the primary focus is on building
and maintaining fertile soil, protecting soil and water
resources is also prioritized.
