Continuing education is a specific learning activity to expand the knowledge base
and stay up-to-date on new developments. Everybody needs extended education
of some level. Even in North America where library schools offer AlA-accredited
programs, there is a realization that professional librarians need to continue
education throughout their: career as contexts change and standards evolve. Many
of the principles learnt at library schools may still be relevant thirty years down
the line, but some of them likely require revision, or at least reinterpretation
(Hider, 2006). It is appropriate here to remind ourselves of the difference between
"training" and "continuing education". "Training" means a class taken to obtain
a new certification. "Continuing education" means a class taken to maintain a
current certification. The classes are the same (Texas Propane Company, 2013)
