Sitting in a sitz bath, where the hips, bottom, and upper thighs are immersed in warm or cold water is recommended to bring the hemorrhoid swelling down as well as to combat constipation. Adding Epsom salts or baking soda to the bath water will help in easing the swelling as well as in keeping the rectal area clean. Never use hot water while soaking in sitz baths, and it will not help by adding soap to the water as well. Such actions will only worsen the condition and not provide any kind of relief.
