Insects
Insects(class Insecta ) are distinguishedfrom other arthropods by having only three pairs of legs as adults. They are thelargest and most diverse group of animalson earth but are rare in the sea. Mostmarine insects live at the water’s edge, where they scavenge among seaweeds,barnacles, and rocks. Many inhabit thedecaying seaweed that accumulates at thehigh tide mark. One marine insect that is found far from shore is the water strider(see Fig. 15.16)
