How can one believe that one is part of a community of shared interests
when differences in status and privilege are obvious and rife?
It seems quite reasonable in these circumstances to see oneself as part
of an exploited and disadvantaged group of people, and to band together
with one's fellows to see what gains and benefits can be extracted from
one's employers. This is what has made unions thrive, making organizations
become divided worlds reflecting and entrenching class divisions
found in the wider society.
