In South Africa, to accelerate growth and
share more evenly its benefits, government
initiatives to meet these challenges have
taken various forms. In 1996, the
government's plan to alleviate poverty relied
prominently on a market-based approach to
foster growth and create jobs. Trade
liberalization has in particular been at the
forefront of the country's post-Apartheid
economic strategy, reflecting a commitment
to outward-stimulated development.
