2. Close-range remote sensing and 3D imagery
Terrestrial laser scanning and digital photogrammetry are closerange
remote-sensing technologies that can be used to obtain
dense 3D point clouds of a space or an object. In this context, the
term “dense” indicates that the collected geometrical data is sufficiently
complete, that is, the number of regularly spaced points
measured on the object's surface is sufficient to correctly describe
the geometrical characteristics of the object. Hence, the notion of
density depends on the size of the object being surveyed. In Section
5.3,we discuss the influence of point cloud density on the modeling
results for our case study.
The following sections briefly present the dense point cloud
acquisition methods used in this study.
