Some states provide opportunities to become a lawyer other than by
attending an ABA school and passing the bar exam. Candidates can
also qualify to take the local bar exam and thus to practice law after
attending a non-ABA school which is a state accredited law school. In
some states, notably in California, candidates can even qualify to take
the bar exam by working for a judge or an attorney without attending
any law school. Those latter options will be discussed below
