Research on the problem of delimitation of the tourism sector, the role of
human capital in the innovation decisions of the tourism industry, challenges
for hospitality industry leaders and human resource professionals,
and the use of CRM applications in tourism has yielded fairly consistent
findings over the past decade. Our paper contributes to the literature by
providing evidence on the role of human capital in tourism, the sustainable
development of tourism in the context of a SIDS destination, the increased
complexity of operating a hospitality business enterprise within the context
of a global economy, and the impact of ICTs and e-business on the tourism
sector. The findings of this study have implications for factors that affect the
attraction and retention of local employees in the tourism industry, effective
leadership within the hospitality industry, ICTs’ contribution to the tourism
business strategy development, and the role of human capital in economic
development. These findings highlight the importance of examining the performance
and competitiveness of the tourist sector, the widespread use of
expatriate labor in the tourism industry, the role of employment in the sustainable
development paradigm, and the importance of mobile services for
the tourism sector.
