In this paper, the fully three-dimensional velocity
Þeld for a Kenics mixer under laminar ßow conditions
is obtained using commercially available CFD software
(Section 2). The simulation results are validated
by comparison of the pressure prediction generated
by the simulation with available correlations for pressure
drop in a Kenics mixer (Section 3). Analysis of the
velocity Þeld reveals the spatial periodicity inherent in
the Kenics mixer system, and indicates the importance
of element transitions on the overall velocity
Þeld. The velocity Þeld is then used to calculate the
magnitudes of the rate-of-strain tensor, elongation
velocity, and shear velocity at di¤erent locations in
the ßow as a means of characterizing the mixing
potential for di¤erent regions of the static mixer
device.
