these data would have been helpful only to magnify
the cost difference we observed with a comparison to anexclusive human milk diet because the control group from
the study of Sullivan et al.13 likely had a higher human milk
intake comparedwith previous clinical experience or against
national data. This observation was likely due to a positive
effect that human milk research has on human milk usage.
Overall we felt that the power in having large statewide data
outweighed the benefit of greater resolution on feeding
patterns that a significantly smaller and costly multicenter
chart-review study would provide.
