In 312 of 348 patients, a screening for syphilis with TPHA and/or TPPA was performed at first presentation, of which 63 subjects showed a positive reaction (20.2 %). Of these 312 patients with available syphilis serology, 159 were MSM, with a seroprevalence of 28.9 %. In order to allow for the analysis of late presentation to diagnosis, we identified a subgroup of 292 patients who had received their HIV diagnosis less than 3 months before presentation. Of these, in 260 patients, sufficient data were available for further analysis. 78.8 % of them were male, 52.3 % were MSM, 21.15 were heterosexuals, 17.3 % originated from HPC, 3.1 % were IVDU and in 6.15 %, the risk of HIV transmission was unknown. Overall, the mean age was 34.9 years. 50.4 % of 260 patients were late and 81 (31.2 %) were very late presenters to diagnosis. In 235 of these patients, a screening for syphilis (TPHA/TPPA) was performed at first presentation, which yielded positive results in 21.3 %.
