Pigs and Mud
View passage image
When I was little, I used to make a lot of messes. I was so messy that my mom called me “Little Piggie.” Many people think that pigs love to be messy. But is that true?
Pigs do like to roll in the mud. But they are not trying to get dirty. Instead, they are protecting themselves from heat, the sun, and bugs.
When we get hot, we sweat. Sweat is made out of water and a little salt. The water from the sweat cools off our skin. Sweating helps our bodies stay cool when it is too hot. But pigs do not sweat very much. They cannot stay cool by sweating like we can. So what can a hot pig do when it wants to get cool? It can jump into the mud! A puddle of mud helps a pig cool off. By rolling in the mud, a pig can keep its body nice and cool.
Mud also protects pigs from the sun. People can get sunburns if they stay in the sun too long. Pigs can get sunburns just like people. We can put on sunscreen to protect our skin. Of course, pigs cannot put on sunscreen. Instead, they can use something else—mud! Mud protects a pig's skin from getting burned.
Pigs also roll in mud for another reason. Mud helps keep bugs off of pigs. Bugs such as ticks and mosquitoes love to bite pigs. If a bug tries to bite you, you can swat it away with your hands. Pigs do not have hands. It is hard for them to keep bugs away. When pigs cover themselves in mud, bugs cannot bite them. Mud helps keep bugs off of pigs.
Many people think pigs are dirty animals. It is true that they love mud. And sometimes they can get very dirty. But they do not lie in mud just to get filthy. They roll in mud because mud helps them. Mud keeps them cool. Mud protects them from the sun. Mud helps keep bugs away. Pigs may love mud, but they love it for very good reasons!
