‘Don’t argue’ with dementia sufferers
Bangkok Post1 Dec 2015
Relatives of angry dementia sufferers should show understanding for their declining memory and mental function, not argue with them about their misjudgements, says an association of German support groups.
Dementia sufferers often misplace their wallet or keys, and then nurse a suspicion that people around them are stealing the items, the German Alzheimer’s Society (DAlzG) notes in a new guide titled Dementia. What’s Most Important?.
Although they notice that things are often going badly in their lives, they may not attribute this to their illness. For example, they might think that a coffee machine they can no longer operate is out of order.
They typically react to their difficulties with frustration, anger or uncertainty, which can lead to fights and even more stress. Relatives shouldn’t necessarily try to remind them of things or make them “see reason”, DAlzG advises, saying it’s better to empathise with their feelings, show understanding and offer support. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but it can also arise from other medical conditions.
