Though English played a prominent, though indirect role in the success of our independence movement, its status in the post-independence period continues to be a matter of dispute. While a majority of the people see English as an unhealthy left-over of colonialism, which deserves to be discarded, the other recognism, its potential to serve as a useful link language, both sides are reasonably sound, neither is able to win the debate decisively. The dispute over the status of English, therefore, still continues, with the chances of its resolution rather remote.
