A unique contribution of the FEP was the psychosocial edu- cational support. The present study suggests that a FEP can be utilized as an additional nursing intervention to improve family functioning and increase empowerment in families of children with thalassemia. With the specificity of the inter- ventions described and employed, nurses can contribute to knowledge development about interventions for this popula- tion of families. The FEP could be useful to raise the con- sciousness of nurses and other healthcare professionals to become more aware of the importance of enhancing family functioning and empowerment when managing a serious chronic illness. Although further research about family inter- ventions with this population is needed, family caregivers of children with thalassemia in this study were satisfied with our best practices.
