Encouragement program: Timlet and Williams (2008) stated that
there are many strategies and methods for changing the public’s
behavior, one of which is through encouragement. The decision
was made in accordance with the fact that this scheme (promoting
the separation of organic waste) has never been applied in
this area before; therefore, it should start off with a good perspective
so that people are more eager to join the program. Theselected encouragement program was the reward method, which
does not provide an economic incentive but rewards individuals
with commendation and acknowledgment, such as flags of honor
indicating that the household is a part of the separation program.
This will trigger interest among other households in the community
that has yet to enter the program. Household selection
was performed from among the households that registered in the
program and received the small collection bin to use as the primary
step ofthe separation practice. These registered households
would receive a flag after providing evidence of using the bin to
separate organic waste during the assessment process.
